Much like the MCU's Bucky Barnes, he ends up in Wakanda, but he's not from the secretive country. In Marvel Comics, the White Wolf maintains a connection to Wakanda. RELATED: The Falcon And The Winter Soldier Has To Address The MCU's Most Awkward Relationship The Comic Book White Wolf White Wolf is not one of his codenames in the comics, but it is an important one, and as Bucky heads to the small screen in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, it seems forgotten. Children playing nearby use the name for him as well. The credit scene in Black Panther reveals that is exactly what happens as Shuri greets Bucky, calling him White Wolf. It also gives him access to people who can help remove the Hydra influence from his brain. Bucky is no exception.Ī trip to Wakanda gives Bucky a place to lay low when the rest of the world is looking for him. The MCU, however, always puts its own spin on characters the audience knows from the page. Bucky Barnes eventually lost his life thanks to Hydra experimentation and became the assassin known as the Winter Soldier, not unlike his comic book counterpart. Instead, it was as the friend to Steve Rogers who was going off to war. (Don’t expect the Dora Milaje to take any orders from him, though. When Sebastian Stan made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: The First Avenger, it wasn't as a costumed hero. But it’s possible we will see Bucky serve some kind of White Wolf-ish leadership position when the Infinity War comes knocking on Wakanda’s door later this year. The Hatut Zeraze of the books were quite violent, so I’m not at all convinced we’ll see Bucky (who has no reason to resent the Black Panther) take on that role under the peaceful reign of King T’Challa. That’s a lot to take in, but don’t worry. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger (who has his own, not dissimilar comic-book backstory).īut, once the White Wolf gets over his fratricidal/regicidal thoughts in the comics, he actually becomes quite useful to Wakanda and is driven by brotherly competition (tinged with hatred) and love of country to rise through the ranks and become leader of the Hatut Zeraze-Wakanda’s secret police, not to be confused with the all-female Dora Milaje. Sound familiar? Yeah, it would seem that a lot of White Wolf’s story was absorbed into creating Michael B. When Hunter’s younger adoptive brother, T’Challa, gets the throne instead of him, the White Wolf is consumed with jealousy and feels as though the crown should belong to him. In the books, Hunter’s parents die in a plane crash over Wakanda and he is raised by king T’Chaka. In the comics, White Wolf is the alter ego of T’Challa’s adopted older brother: a white man named Hunter. White Wolf is also the name of a fairly popular and classic villain from the books. But Black Panther comics fans may have gotten an extra layer of meaning here. What good is red and blue without the white? You may have noticed that as Bucky and Shuri went on their pleasant Wakandan walkabout, a number of locals were shouting the nickname “White Wolf!” at Bucky. There’s one more color we should mention to complete this over-analysis of Bucky’s two minutes (if that) of screen time. So that red and blue blanket might be a hint of costumes to come. There is comic-book precedence for Bucky becoming Captain America after Steve actor Chris Evans also looks very likely to retire from the superhero game after these next two Avengers films. With credits in the upcoming Avengers two-part crossover, we can bump that up to five-but that means Stan still has miles to go before he can sleep on his tenure with Marvel. For what it’s worth, Sebastian Stan signed a nine-picture deal with Marvel and, not counting cameos, has only appeared in three movies so far.
